Citânia de Briteiros

The Citânia de Briteiros is one of the most expressive proto-historic settlements of the Iberian Peninsula, both for its size and the monumentality of its walls, urban planning and architecture.It is one of the paradigmatic sites in the history of Portuguese and Iberian archaeology. Its study began in 1874, when FranciscoMartins Sarmento (1833-1899) led the first archaeological excavation campaign.

São Torcato Village

The village of S. Torcato owes its name to the saint who was born in Toledo(Spain) in the 7th century. Saint Torcato was the Bishop of Braga, Porto, and Dume, and the last resident bishop in Braga until its elevation to an archbishopric in 1070, due to the Muslim invasion; his successors settled in Lugo, Galicia.Throughout the year, Saint Torcato has always been a site of constant visitation and pilgrimage by thousands of people.

Sacred Hill

Visit the place known as the Sacred Hill, crowned by the name of Guimarães Castle and the small Romanesque church of São Miguel. According to tradition, it was in this modest church that Afonso Henriques was baptized in the baptismal font that can still be seen inside. In an interpretation by the sculptor Soares dos Reis (1834), an imposing statue placed lower down allows us to imagine the figure and features of the first Portuguese king.Nearby is the Palace of the Dukes of Bragança, now a palace-museum, whose original building dates back to the 15th century.

Historic Center

The city of Guimarães is inseparable from the formation of the Portuguese national identity that took place in the 12th century and, for this reason, is often considered to be the cradle of nationality. The protection and maintenance of traditional building materials and techniques, safeguarding the authenticity and integrity of the buildings, has made Guimarães one of the most important reference models in terms of urban heritage conservation, a factor that contributed to its inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List on 13 December 2001.

Penha Mountain

Located 5km from the city center, Penha Mountain rises to an altitude of 617m. with 60 hectares of green area that impresses with its beauty and harmony, combining religiosity and nature, elements that occupy a place of extraordinary importance. The splendor of the Sanctuary, perched high on top of the mountain, is matched by a landscape of dense, well-preserved trees, strongly punctuated by imposing granite and unique nooks and crannies with cliffs, hermitages, footpaths, fountains and watercourses, picnic areas and viewpoints with a fantastic landscape
